FRED KASRAVI
MAY 3, 1937 - JULY 2, 2004

On July 2, 2004 at 9:20 PM, at the age of 67, Fred peacefully passed away in Toronto, surrounded by family and friends.

Your Triumphant Song
Rumi
On that final day
When the casket moves along
Do not think my soul
Will stay in this world.
Do not weep for me, crying, Tragedy, tragedy.
You will only fall into the snares of delusion-
Now that’s a tragedy!
When you see my lifeless body go by
Do not cry out, Gone, gone.
It is my moment of union.
It is when I come upon
the eternal embrace of my Beloved.
As I am lowered into the ground
Do not say, Farewell, farewell.
For the grave is but a veil
Covering the splendor of Paradise.
Having seen the fall
Consider the rise.
What harm ever came to the setting Sun or Moon?
What appears to you as a setting
is for me a rising.
What appears to you as a prison
is for my soul an endless garden.
Every seed that enters the earth will grow.
Should it be any different with a human seed?
Every bucket that is lowered into a well comes up full.
Should I complain when instead of water
I pull up Joseph himself?
Do not look for your words here,
look for them over there.
Sing to me in the silence of your heart
and I will rise up
to hear your triumphant song.
O soul,
When the veil is gone, we are gone.
With every breath I plant the seeds of devotion-
I am a farmer of the heart.
Day and night I see the face of union-
I am the mirror of God.
Every moment I shape my destiny with a chisel-
I am the carpenter of my own soul.

Dear Jenica and Michael, and Members of the Dr. Fred Kasravi 'Legacy of Peace' Team. You will be surrounded with deep feelings arising from the departure of the wonderful soul of the man I know only as 'Fred'. His story is really unique, and your relationships with him make up a wonderful final chapter. The dedication to helping him to achieve his enlightenment and peace smoothed the way in his losing battle against Cancer. The depth of your effort allowed 'Fred' to conquer death of the body by providing the ongoing message to his many friends and to many others. His message lives on and will be all the more powerful because it persists past death. I testify that my life and my future feels the example of the life and the future of 'Fred', the passionate lover of Peace. Please convey to 'Fred's ' loving family, my warm feelings of gratitude and sympathy. My wish to you and your committee, is one of compassion together with persisting wisdom in selecting the course that you may choose to follow in helping those who will now wish to assist the living 'Fred' to achieve his goal. LOVE,

BRUCE TINGLEY

On behalf of the Canadian Liver Foundation, I would like to express my condolences to the family of Fred Kasravi. We were fortunate to be one of the charities to which Fred devoted his time, energy and passion. He was a man blessed with a big and generous heart and even bigger dreams. At the last CLF fundraising event he hosted, he kicked off his speech by asking the audience if they believed in 'miracles' and he said that each person in the room had the opportunity to become a 'miracle worker' by supporting the Foundation in its fight against liver disease. I believe that this is probably the best way to describe Fred himself - a miracle worker. He faced challenges with humour, courage and perseverance and never stopped believing that he could make the impossible possible. He once quoted Winston Churchill as saying, 'We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.' By this measure, Fred made a life unlike any other.
It was an honour and a privilege knowing him and we all will miss his energy and enthusiasm.

To all those who loved Fred:
I had the incredible opportunity of meeting Fred for the first time on his birthday in 2003. It was a great priviledge for me to pre-interview him at that time for inclusion in a documentary film on a World Peace Project which Fred later championed. During my hour alone with Fred, I was stunned by his compassion for humanity, and his big and open heart. And I knew immediately that he would be completely wonderful on camera. About a month later, I returned with my film crew, and captured the essence of this great soul in conversation at his beautiful home in Victoria, B.C. We completed the documentary, called, "A Legacy of Peace " at the end of 2003. It is a film which moves people to believe that Peace is indeed possible. We only need dare to dream. Which is a lesson that Fred taught to every single person he met, all throughout the course of his life....
I know that I will be forever changed because of Fred, and I am deeply honoured to have met him and call him friend. I will miss him terribly....
May he touch everyone he encounters in Heaven in that same glorious and loving way he touched us here on Earth...
Godspeed dear, dear Fred.....

I was shocked to hear of Fred passing away! I send my condolences to his family and want you to know that you are in my prayers. Fred was an amazing man - there are no words that do justice to describing this man. He was a true social entrepreneur! I am a young businessman in my mid 20s. When I first met Fred it was at his house at one of his large celebrations. His house emulated his style - fantastic gardens, house near the ocean, - the one thing that i marvelled at was his garage. Funny as that sounds - in this garage were pictures of the many many people over the years - photos of him shaking hands, laughing, speaking. He was well recieved and well loved! When talking with him, he was always spirited, full of energy and passion. I am very saddened to hear of his passing. Many wishes to his family. Canada has lost a true son.

With the loss of such a great friend, the innumerable memories we made together will always remain. Here are some of them.
In 1968-1970, I remember holding his sons Kamran and Mehran in my arms, standing alongside dear Lila, in their new house in Toronto. And whenever he came to Iran, we were always together, especially in a recent reception, as well as in other occasions; Some while later, I received the " Never Better " t-shirt from him; I realized then that he was living in a never better world, doing everything he loved and cherished. Because of his love of taking pictures with everyone, I told him, "If God were ever to come to Earth, the first thing you would want is to have a picture with him."
And recently, we came together to celebrate his Honorary Doctorate from Royal Road's University in Victoria where I again enjoyed his hospitality and his surreal discussions on life. We always saw each other in Vancouver and his happiness and jolly face always! brought cheer to my life; I will certainly never forget this.
My heart doesn't want to say goodbye to him, even if I must now. Condolences to myself and all.
Love,
Manouchehr Iranpour

We affectionately called Fred our "cosmic warrior". He had a heart as big as the universe. He was a spiritual man and a visionary for world peace. When we presented the Permanent Peace Project to Fred, he said "Educate me, and then let me be in charge of the project."
He worked on his beloved Legacy of Peace Project from his hospital bed in Toronto. Even then he was waiting for more DVD's to arrive to give to his friends when he went "Home to His Big Garden".
Besides creating peace, Fred and I discovered our soul connection through our mutual love of beauty, flowers and poetry.
I was stunned when I saw his huge vision as a designer expressed in his five Persian columns and his water garden in Victoria.
On Valentine's Day, I brought Fred and Hilary poetry and flowers. Even though he had recently returned home from surgery in LA, he eloquently read the poetry as if he were a statesman addressing the nation. I was filled with the beauty of the moment. Each time I visited Fred, each moment was filled with the power of beauty.

Fred loved greatness; he loved it in others and he demanded it of himself. He wanted only to do great things with his life. We hoped that he would win the Nobel Peace Prize for his Legacy of Peace project. We loved to hear him speak about his desire to build a Peace Palace on Salt Spring Island and to become the Secretary General of a renewed United Nations.
One quiet acknowledgement that Fred received recently was to have his life and his work for peace blessed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. We sent Fred a white silk scarf that had been blessed by His Holiness and were happy to hear that it brought him great comfort in his hospital bed.
Fred always impressed me with his positive attitude. I witnessed how he coached others to leave negativity behind and to see the world in terms of possible solutions. He was a well grounded realist. Yet he was bold and visionary because, I believe, he knew that the extraordinary could be accomplished if there was a solid basis on which to build. He knew that success was often a matter of inspiring others to see what is possible. He was a master in the art of inspiration.
I thank your family for culturing your great spirit.
I miss you, Fred.

Fred was a tremendous spirit, gregarious and heartfelt. The Peace Project was a great project for him to be involved in as he cared deeply for animals, gardens, children and kind people. He was a fierce warrior in his backgammon and an unhesitating believer in our abilities and potential and he will be missed, but his legacy will remain a part of us forever. We knew Fred as a neighbour and although we did not know him well we were touched by his enthusiasm and passion for life. He always responded when we inquired how he was doing with his trademark response "NEVER BETTER" and somehow he made us believe it. We last spoke with him a couple of months ago and his attitude was as it had always been. We can only image what a tremendous loss his passing must be to his family and close friends.
Thank you for sharing this sad news with us. We are sure that we can all take comfort in the example that Fred set for us. His was truly a life well lived.

Hello! There are no words to express the enormous sense of loss that is felt about Freds passing. I have only known Fred for under two years...but had the opportunity of working with him and getting to know him as a fellow board member of The Prostate Center in Victoria. In that period of time he had a tremendous impact on me.
He truly was "Bigger than Life"...and in the couple of projects we worked together on...I have never worked with anyone more devoted, more enthusiastic and never have I met anyone who has had such a positive.."CAN DO" attitude. And...as you mention in the beautiful remembrance.....Freds heart was open to everyone.....he had no boundaries when it came to helping people!! He will be sorely missed but so beautifully remembered...and he is one of those wonderful spirits who has truly left a permanent footprint on this earth. I send my deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
My family will also be making a donation to The Prostate Centre in his honor.
With sincere sympathy,

Dear Family of Dear Dear Fred,
Nancy and I are very saddened by Fred's passing. Dr. Fred Kasravi was always a very generous man who knew and exemplified the true meaning of what it is to be a humanitarian on the world stage. The five pillars on which he based his life, as he explained to us at his beautiful Victoria home, are reminiscent of the Persian gardens of old.
Fred was at once a consummate businessman, quiet leader on the world stage, and deeply connected to the transcendental field of life, that level of individual and cosmic existence that directly reverberates and exprresses Natural Law. We send our deepest condolences to Fred's family, his brother Amir, to Hilary, to his children, and to all Dr. Kasravi's extended family, friends, and associates throughout the world.
We look very forward to attending Dr. Kasravi's services in Victoria.
May God contiinue to Bless you All,

I want to express my sympathy for Fred's family. I had the good fortune to meet Fred in 1993 and came to realize shortly thereafter that Fred was unlike anyone I had ever met. He was very generous and kind and smart but what struck me most was his positive attitude and outlook. Fred often pops into my mind whenever I hear some one ask me the question "how is it going?"... I remember him responding "Never better!" and for that memory and others I am thankful to have met Fred. He reminded me how precious our time is and how we need to make the most of it.
Thank you Fred.

Mr. Herb Lainchbury

I am so heartbroken to hear of Fred's passing. He was a good friend to me for a long time. Below is a note that I sent to a number of Fred's friends this morning FYI.

I have got the news from Soraya on your brother death. It is always very hard to see your loved one is gone & I wish you & your family lots of courage to accept this lost. Unfortunately this is the fact of life and we all will go this road one day sooner or later. I remember once I have seen a sentence from someone who said:
"Death is the last stage of life that one leaves and leaves lots of memories to others and memory never dies"
I believe in this and I think this a truth because we never forget the memory and the great time that we had with our loved one even though they are gone.
My deepest condolences to you and your family.

To The Kasravi Family
We still cannot believe that Fred has left us, but he has left us with so many memories and so many good thoughts. Having known him since our days together in Iran in the seventies and then coming back to Toronto in the nineties to renew our friendship was certainly one of the highlights of our life.
Fred inspired all of us to contribute to the welfare of others and he contributed so much to Canada and Canadians. His upbeat attitude inspired many to rise to greater heights and our family will miss him dearly.
God bless you Fred. We know you are looking down on us and your memory will continue to encourage us to do better.

I'm deeply sorry for your loss. My husband Samuel Sklar passed away of cancer Feb.4/04. Fred had been so supportive of him & kept encouraging him during his illness. When we first heard of his lung cancer we were shocked & then thrilled when his surgery had been successful. Sam was no longer here when I heard of the brain tumor. Again I was shocked & saddened. I saw Fred in the hospital.
He looked great & as usual kept a positive & very brave attitude. I can only hope that these two great friends are once again meeting & enjoying their usual discussions. He will be deeply missed. I also wish to give my condolences to Hillary who gave him such peace & love during those very difficult times.

On behalf of the Luxury Magazine I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family and close friends of Fred Kasravi We were fortunate to be one of the international publications to which Fred contributed his time, energy and passion. He was a man blessed with a big and generous heart and even bigger dreams. At one meeting, I told Fred you can help the world by becoming secretary of the united nation, at first he laughed… I am busy... then he said don’t push me I’ll go for it !, I said its your duty — were do we begin he replied... Dear Fereydoun

A thousand words can't bring you back
We know because we've tried...
Neither will a thousand tears
We know because we've cried...
You left behind our broken hearts
And happy memories too...
But we never wanted memories
We only wanted You.

I was shocked and saddened on July 25 to learn of Fred's passing. I have known Fred since 1987 when he became a client of mine and grew into a friend, as is so common with Fred. He had been on my mind for several weeks, as I had not heard from him for several months. In our last conversation, he told me about his upcoming appointment to the Canadian Museum of Natural History and that he was being honored with an honorary degree. When the phone numbers I had for him did not work, I "googled" him and found this website.
I am stunned. Fred was a wonderful human being and "larger than life". He will be remembered and missed. Mehron, if you remember me, please send me an email. I would like more information. I am sure there must have been a spectacular funeral. I moved from Canada to the US two years ago, so I had no way of knowing about his passing.

Fred came into my life almost 20 years ago, 1986 I think. Soon after our meeting, he phoned and asked whether he could use my condo for a few days. The next time I arrived there there were 200 ties of his in my closet and I knew the arrangement would be more permanent.
Fred and I lived together and laughed together for several years and, as usual, became a large part of my life. I still miss my morning carrot juice.
We kept in close contact since, but less so, once he moved west.
I miss him and I'll remember him always, as will my family, which he made his family.
We are blessed to have a world and country that have been shaped and touched by the will, the leadership, and the vision of Dr. Fred Kasravi. With an unshakeable faith in the values of our world, country and character of our nation, Dr. Fred Kasravi brought positive leadership and hope to those who he touched. His Optimism, strength, and humanity epitomized the spirit of many. At any moment life for him was nothing as he was greater than life itself. Understanding circumstances but living with his legacy we will try to follow his “NEVER BETTER” for days ahead. as it is too hard to be as strong as Fred would have wanted us to be...Fred may you be in peace and ' NEVER BETTER '
Through his courage and determination he enhanced lives of many and especially those in need. He always spread and advanced the spread of peace, optimism and hope for many, who had lived in need.
As a Canadian citizen he helped to change the world. Dr. Fred Kasravi has left us stronger and driven. We take comfort in the legacy he has left behind and the shining and peaceful place that awaits him.
Dr. Fred Kasravis’ legacy and contribution to our world will be missed by all of us...I will love him for life; somethings can not be gone..they live for ever as FRED lives.in all of us...it was our pleasure and honor to have had him in our hearts and lives...with love forever...I miss you FRED, my tears of have no joy not having you with me to share and to be loved by you as you love us all...

To the the family of Fred Kasravi,
I wish to send you my deepest sympathy for the loss of a great and wonder-full creation and a friend whom I had the priviledge of getting to know only over the past few years.
I am gratefull to Mary Lynne Stewart who first introduced Fred to me about 4 years ago, when I was with the Canadian Liver Foundation as National Marketing & Development Director and, over a tea meeting, Fred graciously agreed to become our Gala event Chairman at an important time in the organization's development. Fred gave generously of his most valuable gift - his time - over these years, where his contributions were invaluable - as they were to the many and inumerable people, companies, organizations, governments and charities that he involved himself with.
Fred was always a consumate optimist who Loved people and lived his life with wonder-full enthusiasm, great compasion and grace. I remember Fred often saying that 'he was in the people business' and that 'he was always on duty'. Fred loved the wisdom of life in the many quotes that he was always sharing with those he Loved and interacted with in his life.
In Fred's honour and as one of the 'small people in Fred Kasravi's kingdom', I would like to share some thoughts from those wiser than I.
"The turest end of life is to know that life never ends... Death is no more that a turning of us over from time to eternity." -William Penn
"It is impossible that anything so natural, so necessary, and so universal as death should ever have been designed as an evil to mankind." - Jonathan Swift
"Spend your brief moment according to nature's law, and serenely greet the journey's end as an olive falls when it is ripe, blessing the branch that bare it, and giving thanks to the tree that gave it life." - Marcus Aurelius
"Like a full-fed guest, depart to rest... The profit of life consists not in the space, but in the use. Some man hath lived long that has had a short life. Depart then without fear out of this world even as you came into it. The same way you came from death to life, return from life to death. Yield your torch to others as in a race. Your death is but a piece of the world's order, but a parcel of the world's life." - Michel de Montaigne
"Money may buy the husk of things, but not the kernel. It brings you food but not appetite, medicine but not health, acquaintances but not friends, servants but not faithfulness, days of joy but not peace or happiness." - Henrik Ibsen
Fred was truly a great man, father, innovator, mentor, leader and a faithful supporter of his family and friends who were devoted and faithful to him and who all brought him great peace, happiness, joy and Love in his all too short life - he will be missed by so many and I too will miss Fred and will always carry his 'Never Better' nature forward for he was truly a great inspiration and friend to me.
I want to express my gratitude to all of Fred's family for allowing me the privilege of spending some very precious moments with Fred.

I was most saddened to learn that Mr. Kasravi had died. I have very warm memories of working with him on the development of his coat of arms some years ago. He was a fine teacher in a situation where I needed to understand not only his own family heritage but the wider culture of Iran. He was the first Canadian of Iranian background for whom heraldic honours were created. He will be greatly missed by family and friends and by all those people and institutions whose lives and missions and he touched and influenced. I extend my deepest sympathies to all his family in their great loss.
Sincerely,

Robert D. Watt

I just learned of Fred's passing and I am still in shock. It was a pleasure to have known Fred. When you were in Fred's company you were always smiling because he made sure you were. A more caring social activist I have never met. Fred loved all and treated everyone with the same respect. One of my fondest memories of Fred was the number of late night taxis we shared in Toronto and Victoria. No mater where in the World the driver came from Fred could strike up a conversation with them (usually in their own language) and make them feel special. Of course he would always put in a plug to vote Liberal in the next election. Fred, I will miss you old friend.
